ZHANG Longxi, “Comparison and East-WestEncounter:
The Seventeenth and the Eighteenth Centuries”
East and West as cultures and traditionsbecome possible to conceptualize only in comparison and in the encounters oftrade, travel and other kinds of interactions. If Marco Polo in the thirteenthcentury represented an early stage of East-West encounter in trade and theexpansion of geographical knowledge in Europe, the seventeenth and theeighteenth centuries became the important time of intellectual contact inEast-West encounters through the mediation of Jesuit missionaries and becauseof the internal development of European culture and society during the time ofthe Enlightenment. Not only the trend of chinoiserie changed European taste andaesthetics in material life, but philosophers like Leibniz and Voltaire foundin China what they were seeking for a state and society built on reason ratherthan religious faith. To revisit East-West encounter of that time may help usattain a better understanding of comparison and difference in cross-culturalinterrelations, which remains an issue of particular relevance and importancefor our time today.
ZHANG Longxi has an MA in English from Peking University and a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from Harvard University. He has taught at Harvard,the University of California, Riverside, and is currently Chair Professor ofComparative Literature and Translation at the City University of Hong Kong. Heis an elected foreign member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Letters, Historyand Antiquities and also of Academia Europaea; an Editor-in-Chief of theJournal of World Literature, and an Advisory Editor of New Literary History. Heis the elected President of the International Comparative LiteratureAssociation (ICLA) for the term of 2016-19. He has published more than 20 booksand numerous articles in both English and Chinese, and his book publications inEnglish include The Tao and the Logos: Literary Hermeneutics, East and West(Duke, 1992); Mighty Opposites: From Dichotomies to Differences in theComparative Study of China (Stanford, 1998); Allegoresis: Reading CanonicalLiterature East and West (Cornell, 2005); Unexpected Affinities: Reading acrossCultures (Toronto: 2007); and From Comparison to World Literature (SUNY,2015).

LU Jiande, "The Openness of Modern Chinese Literature"
Towards the end of the 19th century,translation of world literature into Chinese was regarded by many as theprimary requirement for a social and cultural rebirth. Early in the 1930s, Dr.Hu Shih claimed that over the past few decades there had been a ChineseRenaissance, a literary movement that had been deliberately breaking away fromclassical literary tradition. The development of modern Chinese literature,indeed, is inseparably tied up with the introduction of world literature intoChina and almost all the pioneers of modern Chinese literature had experiencesof translation. What seems to be surprising is that Chinese translations offoreign literary works early in the 20th century even helped to form a newlanguage based upon the northern vernacular, namely the language all theChinese writers are using now. Lu Xun, arguably the greatest modern Chinesewriter, even advocated a translation style that would bring about a majorchange in the way the Chinese think and feel. The open-minded movementrepresented by Lu Xun is now part of China’s rich literary heritage.

to2017. He is the author of Fragments of Broken Systems: Essays in Anglo-AmericanLiterature
andHistory of Idea《破碎思想体系的残编――英美文学与思想史论稿》 (2001) andCanvas over the Horizon: Essays without Theoretical Claims《高悬的画布：不带理论的旅行》(2011) and theeditor of Foreign Literature in the Process of Modernisation 《现代化进程中的外国文学》and a 5-volume collectionof T. S. Eliot’s works in Chinese 《艾略特文集》(2012). Over the past few years he haspublished extensively in areas of modern Chinese history and literature.

Michelle Yeh, "Why Modern Chinese Poetry? — Challenges andOpportunities”
If modern Chinese literature has developedinto a broad field over the course of half a century, poetry seems to haveremained a marginalized genre, especially in contrast to fiction and film. Thesituation is ironic in view of the fact that for more than two millennia poetryplayed such an important role in premodern China. What are the uniquechallenges presented by the new genre? In what way can modern poetry shed lighton Chinese literature and culture? What is the current state of the sub-fieldand what is the prospect of its future? These are some of the questions thatwill be explored.
MichelleYeh received her BA from the National Taiwan University and her PhD from theUniversity of Southern California. She is currently Distinguished Professor inthe Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at the University ofCalifornia, Davis. Her primary areas of research are: modern poetry in Chinese,comparative poetics, Taiwan literature, and translation. Major publicationsinclude: Modern Chinese Poetry: Theory and Practice since 1917, From theMargin: An Alternative Tradition of Modern Chinese Poetry, Essays on ModernPoetry from Taiwan, Anthology of Modern Chinese Poetry, Frontier Taiwan: AnAnthology of Modern Chinese Poetry, A Lifetime Is a Promise to Keep: Poems ofHuang Xiang, The Columbia Sourcebook of Literary Taiwan, and Hawk of the Mind:Collected Poems of Yang Mu.

Each day of theconference, we will be offering one lunchtime workshop dedicated to discussionof important professional issues relevant to those of us working in Chinese andComparative Literature. Participation islimited, and preregistration is required—all attendees will receive an emailwith instructions on how to register.Participants in each workshop will be provided with a boxed lunch; nofee is required to participate.

Publishing with Chinese Scholarly Journals and Presses
Many of us would like to see the greaterintegration of scholarly debates which often occur separately in Chinese andEnglish scholarship; one way to increase engagement might be for scholars basedin the West to publish more often in Chinese.However, there are serious barriers to doing so: structural incentives inWestern universities which create bias toward publication in English, as wellas less familiarity with Chinese academic journals and presses. This workshop will aim to provideparticipants with a greater understanding of the different expectations for scholarshippublished in Chinese, what publishers are looking for regarding original worksor translated scholarship, differences in peer review and copyright, etc. In addition, we will encourage an opendiscussion with participants about how to achieve greater recognition forChinese-language publication within Western academic systems.

Early-Career Scholars’ Perspectives on Returning to China
In recent years, continuing woes in the NorthAmerican academic job market, combined with strong Chinese university funding,have prompted more young scholars to return to China after completing PhDsabroad. This phenomenon has been adriver of China’s ongoing intellectual development since the late Qing—but ithas not been constant in either its size or configuration. This workshop will offer an assessment ofwhat the return-to-China looks like as a career track for literary scholars inour present moment. What are thebenefits and drawbacks of such a move?How well do current Western research and teaching methodologies masteredduring the PhD translate to the expectations of the Chinese academicsystem? How does the academic capitalassociated with Western degrees actually function within Chinese academicadministration? And is it practical toremain fully engaged with international academia while based in China? This workshop will be of interest to currentgraduate students thinking about their own career tracks, but also for seniorfaculty based in China and the West, who want to understand the careerpressures faced by younger colleagues migrating between academic systems.

How to Win International Collaborative Research Grants
Many national and regional academic grantingagencies have programs specifically designed to encourage the development ofinternational partnerships. However,these are unusually difficult to access on purely practical grounds: even ifone can find a foreign collaborator for a given research project, it isdifficult to coordinate the demands made by different academic systems. It is hard enough to know what a grantingagency in one’s own nation requires, and what the reviewers of proposals willbe looking for; it is harder still to understand the intricacies of a foreignsystem, or to get two granting systems to offer partial funding for the sameproject. This workshop will focus on theinternational collaboration grants offered by granting agencies in China, NorthAmerica, and Europe, to give participants a basic idea of schedules andrequirements. In addition, we will spendtime putting partipants in contact with each other across national borders, sothat people can begin to discuss specific collaborative proposals before theend of the conference.
